Tree work in Soldiers Point
Littoral rainforest on the foreshore
The vegetation in Yachett Point Reserve is classified as a littoral rainforest, a protected coastal community. Before a branch over a back fence is cut, the line between a private block and the reserve is worth confirming.
A long term resident credits the reserve's casuarinas with giving the foreshore shelter from the winter westerlies. Blocks without that cover take the wind straight across the bay, and thinning a crown lets it pass through instead of loading the tree.
One waterfront redevelopment report said it would be difficult to accommodate replacement planting on the site for lack of space. The same tight footprint means a tall Blackbutt there is usually lowered piece by piece on ropes.

Soldiers Point questions
Council permits and koala trees by the bay
Which trees grow along the foreshore here?
The reserve's mature trees are mostly casuarina, paperbark and red gum trees. Harm to reserve trees has been treated as vandalism, so work near the edge stays on the private side.
Does council get involved in foreshore pruning?
It has. For pruning in foreshore bushland here, Port Stephens Council said the Tree Permit was issued by Council staff, and its Vegetation Officer directed the works. The council has also committed to replanting Forest Red Gum saplings grown from seed collected onsite.
Why do koala rules come up so often?
Port Stephens has a Comprehensive Koala Plan of Management, approved by the Department of Planning in 2002. Forest red gum is the koala tree in this bushland, so the plan is part of the check before a native tree is touched.
