Tree work in Oakhampton Heights

Remnant forest around the old water works

Walka Water Works, including the boiler house and western annexes, is a heritage item of state significance in the Maitland Local Environmental Plan. Around its reservoir catchment, an isolated stand of an endangered ecological community, Lower Hunter spotted gum-ironbark forest, has survived.

Those trees are on public land and are not a private job. On a house block nearby, Maitland City Council sets its own tree rules, and they are checked for the address before work is quoted.

Oakhampton Heights questions

Getting in when the water rises

Can floods cut the suburb off?

During the July 2022 Hunter River flood, the SES warned that Oakhampton Heights may remain isolated due to buildup of localised water. A tree job booked for a week like that is moved until access returns.

How much rain can fall here at once?

In April 2015, hourly totals of between 100 to 150 millimetres were recorded at Maitland and Dungog. That much water loads a canopy and softens the soil a tree stands in.

Is a big gum near the house removed or reduced?

It depends on its health and lean. A sound tree can often have its heavy limbs reduced; a split or leaning one is usually taken down in sections.
