Tree removal in Dora Creek

Tree removal, pruning and stump grinding in Dora Creek, along the creek flats and the low-lying streets that flood.

Tree work in Dora Creek

Heavy rain and soft creek ground

In the February 2014 downpour that brought trees down across Lake Macquarie, Dora Creek was the hardest hit, with 261mm in the 24 hours to 9am. Ground that wet lets a tall tree with a heavy crown pull its roots loose.

The 2007 flood, perhaps the largest here in living memory, was rated a 1-in-20-year flood. After water has sat around a tree, the soil can stay soft long enough to matter when a machine is set down.

Floods also leave debris caught in limbs and roots, and a tree that leans after high water is worth checking before the next storm.

Dora Creek questions

Casuarinas and the creek banks

Are the casuarinas blocking the floodway?

Residents have asked for them to be cleared, but the council says the casuarina growth does not count as a blockage in the floodway. Those stands are the council's to manage, not part of a private job.

What happens to trees when the creek floods?

In the April 2015 storm the creek's banks were breached in low-lying areas, and people waded through floodwater. Trees on those flats sit in wet soil for days, which weakens their hold.

Does a casuarina in my yard need approval?

It may. Casuarinas are native, and Lake Macquarie's rules leave it to the owner to identify if a tree is native before any pruning or removal starts.
