Tree work in Salt Ash

Fire after fire on the peninsula

The Newcastle Herald has recalled the October 2013 Salt Ash inferno, which destroyed four houses. Around buildings, tree work here is often about fuel: dead trees out and canopies lifted well clear.

In August 2018 a winter fire spread across almost 2000 hectares from Salt Ash to Tanilba Bay. Trees scarred by fires like that can stand for years before decay in the trunk lets them fail.

The national parks fire history adds a 2023-24 wildfire at Salt Ash. A burnt trunk near the house is worth having assessed rather than guessed at.

Salt Ash questions

Floodwater and the bushfire clearing rule

Does flooding affect trees in Salt Ash?

Yes. In May 2025 dozens of homes and businesses were inundated with more than a metre of water in one downpour. Saturated ground loosens root plates, and soft yards limit where a truck or grinder can go.

Why are roots so shallow here?

Port Stephens Council has pointed to high groundwater levels, tidal influences and blocked drains as strains on Salt Ash drainage. A high water table keeps roots near the surface, which leaves trees prone to wind throw after rain.

Can trees near the house be cleared for bushfire?

Inside a bushfire entitlement area, trees within 10 metres of a home can be cleared, and Port Stephens says there is no need to apply to council for that. Check the RFS online tool on the day you are clearing.
